"content": "=====================================================\r\n Installation instructions for OpenCyc release 4.0\r\n=====================================================\r\n\r\nWelcome!\r\n\r\nTwo OpenCyc 4.0 releases are available, one for Linux and one for\r\nWindows. (Since OpenCyc 4.0 is implemented in Java 1.6, the two\r\ninstallations differ primarily in their startup scripts.)\r\n\r\nOpenCyc requires 3G RAM under 64bit and about 1G of disk space.\r\nRunning OpenCyc under 32bit is no longer supported.\r\n\r\n\r\nOpenCyc for Windows has been tested on\r\n\r\n = Windows Server 2008 \r\n = Windows 7 Personal, Professional and Ultimate\r\n\r\nOpenCyc for Linux has been tested on \r\n\r\n = SuSE 10.3 and OpenSuSE 11\r\n = Ubuntu 12.04 Precise\r\n = Debian 6.04 \r\n\r\n\r\nThis OpenCyc release has not been tested on Mac OS-X or on Solaris.\r\nHowever, other versions of Cyc are currently deployed on these\r\narchitectures and as little work as adjusting the startup scripts may\r\nbe all that is needed.\r\n\r\n\r\nOpenCyc 4.0 has been tested with the following Java implementations\r\n\r\n (*) OpenJDK 1.6 IcedTea6 1.11.1\r\n (*) OpenJDK 1.7 IcedTea7 2.1.1\r\n (*) Oracle/Sun JDK 1.6 u32\r\n (*) Oracle/Sun JDK 1.7 u4\r\n (*) IBM Java 1.6 u10\r\n (*) IBM Java 1.7 u3\r\n\r\n\r\nTo view the full OpenCyc documentation: http://www.opencyc.org\r\n\r\n== Installation ==\r\n\r\n1. Create a directory to contain opencyc (call it something like\r\n 'opencyc'), copy the archive into that directory, then untar or\r\n unzip the compressed archive.\r\n\r\n For Linux:\r\n \r\n tar -xvfz opencyc-4.0.tgz\r\n\r\n For Windows:\r\n\r\n unzip the zipped folder\r\n\r\n This will create a directory named opencyc-4.0 under the directory\r\n you created.\r\n\r\n2. Invoke the script to run OpenCyc. \r\n\r\n For Linux: \r\n\r\n cd opencyc-4.0/scripts\r\n ./run-cyc.sh\r\n\r\n For Windows: \r\n\r\n Navigate to the directory opencyc-4.0\\scripts\r\n double-click the file run-cyc.bat\r\n\r\n When OpenCyc is started, it loads the KB into memory; depending on the\r\n amount of RAM on your system and the speed of your disk, this can take\r\n between one and two minutes. \r\n\r\n Once OpenCyc is running, you will see \r\n\r\n CYC(1):\r\n\r\n which is the SubL command prompt. Don't close the window containing\r\n this prompt because it will kill the image.\r\n\r\n3. (optional) \r\n You can enter SubL expressions such as (+ 1 2) or (genls #$Person)\r\n or (all-genls #$Person) at the command line to verify Cyc's operation.\r\n \r\n4. At this point the cyc http server is running and you can access\r\n Cyc directly via the local web browser.\r\n\r\n http://localhost:3602/cgi-bin/cg?cb-start\r\n\r\n To access from a remote machine, change 'localhost' to the IP name of the\r\n machine running Cyc, e.g.\r\n\r\n http://hamlet.mydomain.com:3602/cgi-bin/cg?cb-start\r\n\r\n You can browse Cyc via the Guest account or perform updates by\r\n logging on as CycAdministrator (the default).\r\n\r\n5. You can cleanly shut down the OpenCyc server by entering (halt-cyc-image) \r\n at the SubL command prompt, CYC(N):\r\n\r\n"

Its distribution was discontinued in early 2017 because such “fragmenting” led to divergence, and led to confusion amongst its users and the technical community generally that that OpenCyc fragment was Cyc. Those wishing access to the latest version of the Cyc technology today should contact info@cyc.com to obtain a research license or a commercial license to Cyc itself. Information about ResearchCyc can be found [here](http://www.cyc.com/platform/researchcyc/) and EnterpriseCyc [here](http://www.cyc.com/platform/enterprisecyc-license/).\n\nThe OpenCyc Platform is your gateway to the full power of Cyc, the world's largest and most complete general knowledge base and commonsense reasoning engine. OpenCyc contains hundreds of thousands of Cyc terms organized in a carefully designed ontology. Cycorp offers this ontology at no cost and encourages you to make use of, and extend, this ontology rather than starting your own from scratch. OpenCyc can be used as the basis of a wide variety of intelligent applications such as:\n\n* rich domain modeling\n* semantic data integration\n* text understanding\n* domain-specific expert systems\n* game AIs\n* to name just a few.\n\nRelease 4.0 of OpenCyc includes:\n\nThe core Cyc ontology whose domain is all of human consensus reality. The current release includes:\n\n* ~239,000 terms (up from ~177,000 terms in the previous release)\n* ~2,093,000 triples (up from ~1,500,000 in the previous release)\n\nSelect class (direct and indirect) instance counts:\n\n* 'place': ~19,000\n* 'organization': ~26,000\n* 'predicate': ~22,000\n* 'business related thing': ~28,000\n* 'person': ~12,700\n* n ~69,000 owl:sameAs links to external (non-Cyc) semantic data namespaces:\n\n * DBpedia: ~47,000 links, including 696 links to the DBpedia ontology\n * UMBEL: ~21,000 links\n * WordNet: ~11,000 links\n * Wikicompany: 1028 links\n * CIA World Factbook: 172 links\n * RDFAbout SEC company identifiers: 661 links\n * RDFAbout states and counties: 71 links\n * FOAF: 44 links\n\n* English strings (a canonical one and alternatives) corresponding to each concept term, to assist with search and display.\n* A java-based Cyc Inference Engine and the Cyc Knowledge Base Browser\n* Documentation and self-paced learning materials to help users achieve a basic- to intermediate-level understanding of the issues of knowledge representation and application development using Cyc.\n* A specification of CycL, the language in which Cyc (and hence OpenCyc) is written.\n* A specification of the Cyc API for application development.\n\n## Availabilty\n\nOpenCyc is available for download from SourceForge under an OpenCyc License.\n\nThe OpenCyc KB content is also available via downloadable OWL files, as semantic web endpoints, and via web services.\n\nCycorp also offers a complete version of Cyc, including many more assertions and additional NL capabilities, under a ResearchCyc license at no cost for research purposes. For commercial applications, EnterpriseCyc provides a supported version of the knowledge base and reasoning technology that includes enterprise-grade development, deployment, and administration capabilities.\n\nYou can download the OpenCyc knowledgebase and inference system from SourceForge.\n\n## OpenCyc Ontologies (OWL Files)\n\nThe full OpenCyc content is available for download in the following OWL files:\n\n* Current version: [opencyc-latest.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-latest.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: 96110c055c66b8774529b3b529ac2b55\n\n### Archived Versions\n\n* 2012 May 10\n\nPermanent IDs: [opencyc-2012-05-10.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2012-05-10.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: b9d27434a4f1333980a60d31d989b467\n\nHuman-readable IDs: [opencyc-2012-05-10-readable.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2012-05-10-readable.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: 30b9c78d069cce2148c3a735fba3e77e\n\n* 2010 August 15\n\nPermanent IDs: [opencyc-2010-08-15.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2010-08-15.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: da28191aeb1885e243cb47d625e69d36\n\nHuman-readable IDs: [opencyc-2010-08-15-readable.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2010-08-15-readable.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: 209d16a2858cdcded23ffd3c9f9e54a8\n\n* 2009 April 07\n\nPermanent IDs: [opencyc-2009-04-07.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2009-04-07.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: 5fb3a25fb97d24312974bcf29675fae7\n\nHuman-readable IDs: [opencyc-2009-04-07-readable.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2009-04-07-readable.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: 7ff7874b550dbdb27811ed50f240dcc4\n\n* 2008 June 10\n\nPermanent IDs: [opencyc-2008-06-10.owl.gz](https://github.com/asanchez75/opencyc/blob/master/opencyc-2008-06-10.owl.gz)\n\nmd5 checksum: 5bc2cb422e9c4528392019387dcd27e2\n\n---\n**DISCLAIMER**\n\nAll the texts above were extracted from pages from [http://www.cyc.com](http://www.cyc.com)\nCopyright ©2018 Cycorp, Inc.
