Use this repo to\nbounce ideas and share novel ways people are solving established problems._\n\nA [wigwam](https://taylor.town/pardon-2023#wigwams) is a project that reduces reliance on\n[battleships](https://taylor.town/pardon-2023#wigwams).\n\nMore specifically, a wigwam is a reasonably-established project that provides alternatives to bloat/cruft.\n\nRemember, wigwams aren't better than battleships -- they're not even boats! Let's celebrate novelty and learn to build\ntogether.\n\n|                                                         |                                                   | started | stable |  goals |\n| ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------: | ------: | -----: | -----: |\n| [RepRap](https://reprap.org/wiki/RepRap)                |                                                   |    2005 |    yes | ✋💰🏰 |\n| [Precious Plastic](https://www.preciousplastic.com)     | [donate](https://www.preciousplastic.com/support) |    2013 |    yes | 🌲🏡🏰 |\n| [mu](https://github.com/akkartik/mu)                    |                                                   |    2015 |     no | 🏡🏰♿ |\n| [Zig](https://ziglang.org)                              |                [donate](https://ziglang.org/zsf/) |    2016 |     no | 🪶🏎️🏰 |\n| [sourcehut](http://sourcehut.org)                       |                                                   |    2019 |     no | 🪶💰🏡 |\n| [Gemini](https://geminiprotocol.net)                    |                                                   |    2019 |     no | 🏡🪶🏰 |\n| [Roc](https://www.roc-lang.org)                         |    [donate](https://github.com/sponsors/roc-lang) |    2019 |     no | 🏰🏎️✋ |\n| [Learn MYOG](https://learnmyog.com/)                    |                                                   |    2020 |    yes | 🏡🌲💰 |\n| [Uxn](https://100r.co/site/uxn.html)                    |       [donate](https://100r.co/site/support.html) |    2020 |     no | 🌲🪶🏰 |\n| [Hare](https://harelang.org)                            |                                                   |    2022 |     no | 🪶🏰🌋 |\n| [Freewheeling Apps](https://akkartik.name/freewheeling) |                                                   |    2022 |     no | 🏡🏰♿ |\n| [Dusk OS](http://duskos.org)                            |          [donate](http://duskos.org/funding.html) |    2022 |     no | 🌲🏰🌋 |\n\n<!--\npotential:\n- https://woob.tech\n- IndyMill: https://indystry.cc/indymill/\n- markdown, irc, rss, other existing tech\n- light phone\n- oxide servers\n- framework computers\n- https://www.goatcounter.com\n- kagi\n- menuet os\n- forth chips\n- parallax propeller processors\n- communes/coops?\n- https://www.radiotopia.fm/donate\n- viewpoints research institute\n- fairphone\n- https://www.opensourceecology.org\n- https://blot.im\n--->\n\n<!--\nfuture columns:\n- image/logo\n- three-word description\n- seeking $/year\n- seeking contributors/specialists\n- tutorials\n- definition of \"done\"\n--->\n\nWigwams we want:\n\n- affordable DIY motor vehicles\n- a dirt-simple OS for practical use [and reuse](https://permacomputing.net)\n- tools/guides for \"kit\" homes that can be constructed from nearby materials, e.g. how to clear patch of forest and\n  build cabin with lumber\n- tools for converting suburban sprawl into human-scale walkable infrastructure\n- simple/predictable query languages and databases ([email Taylor](mailto:hello@taylor.town) for ideas)\n- a simple, open search engine\n- scalable diy paper production and printing presses\n- expressive but small visual markup languages\n- kits/guides for making everyday clothes out of fabric and scraps\n- alternative to YouTube that smells more like podcasts than cryptocurrency ([email Taylor](mailto:hello@taylor.town)\n  for ideas)\n\n<!--\nmore potential wigwams\n- open isps?\n- tiny browser\n--->\n\n<!--\nmore stuff we need:\n- open spiroligomers\n- synthetic bio\n- ai stuff\n--->\n\n## goals\n\n<!-- A wigwam can be open-sourced or venture-backed or whatever. -->\n\n- promote \"slow tech\" over hype\n- organize project landscape by goals\n- match talent quickly and effectively\n- sustainably fund unsexy infrastructure\n- keep projects on-schedule and within budget\n- maintain list of \"open problems\" in need of new wigwams\n\n## roadmap\n\n- [ ] more wigwams\n- [ ] rss feed\n- [ ] more wigwam details\n- [ ] dedicated site\n- [ ] sorting/filtering?\n- [ ] detailed wigwam suggestions\n- [ ] learning resources\n- [ ] wigwam commit history stats\n- [ ] wigwam quality stats\n- [ ] talent matching\n\n## contribute\n\nFeel free to [open a PR](https://github.com/surprisetalk/wigwams/edit/main/readme.md) or\n[send me](mailto:hello@taylor.town) suggestions.\n\n<!--\nother cool projects:\n- [Sivers's Tech Independence](https://sive.rs/ti)\n- whole code catalog\n- permacomputing.org\n- concrete weight set forms\n--->\n\n## legend\n\n|     |                  |\n| --- | ---------------- |\n| 🏎️  | speed            |\n| 💰  | affordability    |\n| 🏡  | local            |\n| 🏰  | reliability      |\n| ♿  | accessibility    |\n| ✋  | ergonomics       |\n| 🪶  | size/weight      |\n| 🔒  | privacy/security |\n| 🌋  | existential      |\n| 🌲  | sustainability   |\n| 🌈  | fun              |\n| 🧠  | educational      |\n"
