"content": "# ‘Ilm\n\n> ‘Ilm (Urdu: عِلْم) is the Urdu term for knowledge. It is pronounced as [/ə.ləm/](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%85#Urdu).\n\nA versatile, clean and minimal template for non-fiction writing. The template is ideal for\nclass notes, reports, and books.\n\nIt contains a title page, a table of contents, and indices for different types of figures;\nimages, tables, code blocks.\n\nDynamic running footer contains the title of the chapter (top-level heading).\n\nSee the [example.pdf](https://github.com/talal/ilm/blob/main/example.pdf) file to see how it looks.\n\n## Usage\n\nYou can use this template in the Typst web app by clicking \"Start from template\" on the\ndashboard and searching for `ilm`.\n\nAlternatively, you can use the CLI to kick this project off using the command:\n\n```sh\ntypst init @preview/ilm\n```\n\nTypst will create a new directory with all the files needed to get you started.\n\nThe template will initialize your package with a sample call to the `ilm` function in a\nshow rule. If you, however, want to change an existing project to use this template, you\ncan add a show rule like this at the top of your file:\n\n```typ\n#import \"@preview/ilm:2.1.0\": *\n\n#set text(lang: \"en\")\n\n#show: ilm.with(\n title: [Your Title],\n authors: \"Max Mustermann\",\n abstract: [#lorem(30)],\n bibliography: bibliography(\"refs.bib\"),\n figure-index: (enabled: true),\n table-index: (enabled: true),\n listing-index: (enabled: true)\n)\n\n// Your content goes here.\n```\n\n> This template uses the [Iosevka] font for raw text (inline code and code blocks). In order to use Iosevka, the font must be installed on your computer. In case Iosevka is not installed, as will be the case for Typst Web App, then the template will fall back to \"DejaVu Sans Mono\" font which is available on Typst Web App.\n\n## Configuration\n\nThe template exports the `ilm` function with several named arguments (read: options). This function also accepts a single, positional argument for the body.\n\n> The language setting for text (`lang` parameter of `text` function) should be\n> defined before the `ilm` function so that headings such as table of contents and\n> bibliography will be defined as per the text language. See example above.\n\n### Options\n\nThe list below shows a _brief description_ for each option. For a detailed explanation of these options, see the [example.pdf](https://github.com/talal/ilm/blob/main/example.pdf) file.\n\n- `cover-page`\\\n type: [string], [content], or `none`\\\n default: `\"use-ilm-default\"`\\\n description: Cover page customization. Authors will be displayed on separate lines on the cover page, with font size automatically adjusted based on the number of authors:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n title: [Your Title],\n authors: (\"John Doe\", \"Jane Smith\", \"Max Mustermann\"),\n)\n```\n\nThe `authors` parameter accepts either a string (single author) or an array of strings (multiple authors).\n\n=== Date format\n\nBy default, the date is shown in the format: `MMMM DD, YYYY`. You can change the date format by specifying a different format string:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n date-format: \"[month repr:long] [day padding:zero], [year repr:full]\",\n)\n```\n\nSee Typst's #link(\"https://typst.app/docs/reference/foundations/datetime/#format\")[official documentation] for more info on how date format strings are defined.\n\n=== Customizing the cover page\nYou have full control over the cover page behavior:\n\n*No cover page:*\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n cover-page: none,\n)\n```\n\n*Custom cover page:*\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n cover-page: [\n #align(center + horizon)[\n #text(4em)[*My Custom Title*]\n #v(2em)\n #text(2em)[Subtitle]\n #v(1em)\n #text(1.2em)[Author Name]\n ]\n ],\n)\n```\n\nWhen you provide custom content, 'Ilm will automatically wrap it in a `page()` for you. The `title`, `authors`, `date`, and `abstract` parameters are still used for document metadata even when a custom cover page is provided.\n\n#emoji.fire Tip: if your custom cover page is complex, define it in a separate file and import it:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n cover-page: [#include \"custom-cover.typ\"],\n)\n```\n\n== Preface\nThe preface content is shown on its own separate page after the cover page.\n\nYou can define it using:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n preface: [\n = Preface Heading\n Your content goes here.\n ],\n)\n```\n\n#emoji.fire Tip: if your preface is quite long then you can define it in a separate file and import it in the template definition like so:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n // Assuming your file is called `preface.typ` and is\n // located in the same directory as your main Typst file.\n preface: [#include \"preface.typ\"],\n)\n```\n\n== Table of Contents\nBy default, 'Ilm display a table of contents before the body (your main content). You can disable this behavior using:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n table-of-contents: none,\n)\n```\n\nThe `table-of-contents` option accepts the result of a call to the `outline()` function, so if you want to customize the behavior of table of contents then you can specify a custom `outline()` function:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n table-of-contents: outline(title: \"custom title\"),\n)\n```\n\nSee Typst's #link(\"https://typst.app/docs/reference/model/outline/\")[official documentation] for more information.\n\n== Body\nBy default, the template will insert a #link(\"https://typst.app/docs/reference/layout/pagebreak/\")[pagebreak] before each chapter, i.e. first-level heading. You can disable this behavior using:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n chapter-pagebreak: false,\n)\n```\n\n== Appendices\nThe template can display different appendix, if you enable and define it:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n appendix: (\n enabled: true,\n title: \"Appendix\", // optional\n heading-numbering-format: \"A.1.1.\", // optional\n body: [\n = First Appendix\n = Second Appendix\n ],\n ),\n)\n```\n\nThe `title` and `heading-numbering-format` options can be omitted as they are optional and will default to predefined values.\n\n#emoji.fire Tip: if your appendix is quite long then you can define it in a separate file and import it in the template definition like so:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n appendix: (\n enabled: true,\n // Assuming your file is called `appendix.typ` and is\n // located in the same directory as your main Typst file.\n body: [#include \"appendix.typ\"],\n ),\n)\n```\n\n== Bibliography\nIf your document contains references and you want to display a bibliography/reference listing at the end of the document but before the indices then you can do so by defining `bibliography` option:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n // Assuming your file is called `refs.bib` and is\n // located in the same directory as your main Typst file.\n bibliography: bibliography(\"refs.bib\"),\n)\n```\n\nThe `bibliography` option accepts the result of a call to the `bibliography()` function, so if you want to customize the behavior of table of contents then you can do so by customizing the `bibliography()` function that you specify here. See Typst's #link(\"https://typst.app/docs/reference/model/bibliography/\")[official documentation] for more information.\n\n== Indices\nThe template also displays an index of figures (images), tables, and listings (code blocks) at the end of the document, if you enable them:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n figure-index: (\n enabled: true,\n title: \"Index of Figures\" // optional\n ),\n table-index: (\n enabled: true,\n title: \"Index of Tables\" // optional\n ),\n listing-index: (\n enabled: true,\n title: \"Index of Listings\" // optional\n ),\n)\n```\n\nThe `title` option can be omitted as it is optional and will default to predefined values.\n\n== Footer\nBy default, 'Ilm displays page numbers in the footer with alternating alignment (left on even pages, right on odd pages). If a page does not begin with a chapter, the chapter's name is shown alongside the page number.\n\nLook at the page numbering for the current page. It should show \"#upper[Layout]\" next to the page number because the current subheading _Footer_ is part of the _Layout_ chapter.\n\nWhen we say chapter, we mean the the first-level or top-level heading which is defined using a single equals sign (`=`).\n\n=== Customizing page numbering\nYou can customize the page numbering style in footer or disable it entirely:\n\n*Disable page numbering:*\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: none,\n)\n```\n\n*Different styles:*\n```typst\n// Alternating sides with chapter name (default)\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: \"page-number-alternate-with-chapter\",\n)\n\n// Left-aligned with chapter name\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: \"page-number-left-with-chapter\",\n)\n\n// Right-aligned with chapter name\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: \"page-number-right-with-chapter\",\n)\n\n// Centered page number only (no chapter name)\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: \"page-number-center\",\n)\n\n// Left-aligned page number only (no chapter name)\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: \"page-number-left\",\n)\n\n// Right-aligned page number only (no chapter name)\n#show: ilm.with(\n footer: \"page-number-right\",\n)\n```\n\n= Text\nTypst defaults to English for the language of the text. If you are writing in a different language then you need to define you language before the 'Ilm template is loaded, i.e. before the `#show: ilm.with()` like so:\n\n```typst\n#set text(lang: \"de\")\n#show: ilm.with(\n // 'Ilm's options defined here.\n)\n```\n\nBy defining the language before the template is loaded, 'Ilm will set title for bibliography and table of contents as per your language settings as long as you haven't customized it already.\n\n== External links\n'Ilm adds a small maroon circle to external (outgoing) links #link(\"https://github.com/talal/ilm\")[like so].\n\nThis acts as a hint for the reader so that they know that a specific text is a hyperlink. This is far better than #underline[underlining a hyperlink] or making it a #text(fill: blue)[different color]. Don't you agree?\n\nIf you want to disable this behavior then you can do so by setting the concerning option to `false`:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n external-link-circle: false,\n)\n```\n\n== Blockquotes\n'Ilm also exports a `blockquote` function which can be used to create blockquotes. The function has one argument: `body` of the type content and can be used like so:\n\n```typst\n#blockquote[\n A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.\n --- Gandalf\n]\n```\n\nThe above code will render the following:\n\n#blockquote[\n A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.\n --- Gandalf\n]\n\n== Small- and all caps\n'Ilm also exports functions for styling text in small caps and uppercase, namely: `smallcaps` and `upper` respectively.\n\nThese functions will overwrite the standard #link(\"https://typst.app/docs/reference/text/smallcaps/\")[`smallcaps`] and #link(\"https://typst.app/docs/reference/text/upper/\")[`upper`] functions that Typst itself provides. This behavior is intentional as the functions that 'Ilm exports fit in better with the rest of the template's styling.\n\nHere is how Typst's own #std-smallcaps[smallcaps] and #std-upper[upper] look compared to the 'Ilm ones:\\\n#hide[Here is how Typst's own ] #smallcaps[smallcaps] and #upper[upper]\n\nThey both look similar, the only difference being that 'Ilm uses more spacing between individual characters.\n\nIf you prefer Typst's default spacing then you can still use it by prefixing `std-` to the functions:\n\n```typst\n#std-smallcaps[your content here]\n#std-upper[your content here]\n```\n\n== Tables\nIn order to increase the focus on table content, we minimize the table's borders by using thin gray lines instead of thick black ones. Additionally, we use small caps for the header row. Take a look at the table below:\n\n#let unit(u) = math.display(math.upright(u))\n#let si-table = table(\n columns: 3,\n table.header[Quantity][Symbol][Unit],\n [length], [$l$], [#unit(\"m\")],\n [mass], [$m$], [#unit(\"kg\")],\n [time], [$t$], [#unit(\"s\")],\n [electric current], [$I$], [#unit(\"A\")],\n [temperature], [$T$], [#unit(\"K\")],\n [amount of substance], [$n$], [#unit(\"mol\")],\n [luminous intensity], [$I_v$], [#unit(\"cd\")],\n)\n\n#figure(caption: ['Ilm's styling], si-table)\n\nFor comparison, this is how the same table would look with Typst's default styling:\n\n#[\n #set table(inset: 5pt, stroke: 1pt + black)\n #show table.cell.where(y: 0): it => {\n v(0.5em)\n h(0.5em) + it.body.text + h(0.5em)\n v(0.5em)\n }\n #figure(caption: [Typst's default styling], si-table)\n]\n\n= Code\n== Custom font and size\n'Ilm uses the Iosevka @wikipedia_iosevka font for raw text instead of the default DejaVu Sans Mono. If Iosevka is not available then the template will fall back to DejaVu Sans Mono.\n\n#[\n #let snip(cap) = figure(caption: cap)[\n ```rust\n fn main() {\n let user = (\"Adrian\", 38);\n println!(\"User {} is {} years old\", user.0, user.1);\n\n // tuples within tuples\n let employee = ((\"Adrian\", 38), \"die Mobiliar\");\n println!(\"User {} is {} years old and works for {}\", employee.0.1, employee.0.1, employee.1);\n }\n ```\n ]\n\n #show raw: set text(font: \"DejaVu Sans Mono\")\n For comparison, here is what `code` in DejaVu Sans Mono looks like:\n #snip(\"Code snippet typeset in DejaVu Sans Mono font\")\n\n #show raw: set text(font: (\"Iosevka\", \"DejaVu Sans Mono\"))\n and here is how the same `code` looks in Iosevka:\n #snip(\"Code snippet typeset in Iosevka font\")\n]\n\nIn the case that both code snippets look identical then it means that Iosevka is not installed on your computer.\n\nYou can use Typst's default raw text formatting by setting the `raw-text` option to a special string:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n raw-text: \"use-typst-default\",\n)\n```\n\nAlternatively, you can specify your own custom font and size using a dictionary:\n\n```typst\n#show: ilm.with(\n raw-text: (\n // font takes a list of fonts in order of priority.\n font: (\"JetBrains Mono\", \"Cascadia Mono\"),\n size: 10pt,\n ),\n)\n```\n"
